AMERICAN KANG DUK WON

O Ki No Yari















1. BOW
(1-6 to N) Begin with feet in open stance.

Yari is chambered to right side of body with arm behind the shaft.
Left hand is resting at lower abdomen/hip.
Left foot moves to right foot -bow.
Move left foot back out to slightly opened stance

2. Present yari
Left hand moves across body to receive yari as right hand moves the weapon slightly in front of body.
Yari is extended directly forward - right hand chest high, left hand mid-section high
(Remain in open stance.)
Initiate dynamic breathing and presentation of yari - breathe and prepare for kata.

3. High standing guard
Step back with left foot, forming a RBS
Raise bo end of weapon over head with left hand, yari blade diagonally downward with right hand in guarding technique
Hold position; use peripheral vision to analyze surroundings.

4. Mid-guard
Remaining in a RBS - lower bo end and slightly lift yari blade to a mid-guarding technique
Left hand is at mid-thigh. Right hand is mid-section high with yari blade now up and extended forward in preparation for first blocking technique.
(As yari blade lowers, 1/4 step or shift of weight forward may be made to adjust stance.)

5. Triple circular block
Remaining in a RBS - execute three consecutive cw circular blocks with yari blade end of weapon. Techniques should be done with a sharp twisting movement.
(A defined, yet momentary, pause should follow each block.)
Yari blade remains in the upward position, while bo end is approximately mid-thigh level.

6. High, standing preparation
Slide the left foot forward to right foot.
(Feet will be slightly turned to the left.)
Raise weapon overhead; yari blade is downward in right hand; bo end is high in left hand.
(Pause briefly in high preparation for following strike.)

7. Stabbing technique
Step forward into a right forward stance with yari in right hand, shaft of weapon across the front of body and bo end in left hand.
Execute a strong upper body stabbing technique.

8. Bo end hooking block
(8-10 to NW)
Step 45 degrees to NW in LBS.
Bo end cw hooking block is executed mid-section high.

9. Step away, slashing technique
Step back 180 degrees with left foot to SE, forming a RBS.
(Remain facing NW.) Execute a right downward slashing technique to opponent's wrist.

10. Double stabbing technique
Remain in RBS; quickly shuffle forward with a double stabbing technique.
Apply as upper body strikes for both techniques with right hand forward.

11. Turn, shift yari, standing high preparation
(11-12 to SE)
Turn 180 degrees to SE, shift yari blade to left side while forming LBS.
Move right foot to left, form a high standing preparation.
Raise bo end of weapon over head with right hand, yari blade diagonally downward with left hand in guarding technique.

12. Sliding stabbing technique, high standing guard
Move forward into a long left forward stance and execute a sliding stab to SE.
Pull left foot back to right foot, returning to the high guarding stance
(Pause briefly before moving to next technique.)

13. Shift yari, skip/crossing stance, low block, stabbing technique
(13 to W)
Move to the right (W) in a HS, feet to S, while looking W.
Shift yari blade to right side (W), while bo end is in left hand (E).
(Over and under hand positions are applied in shifts.)
Shift yari blade to opposite side (left), skip and cross left foot over right foot.
Execute a low ccw downward block with bo end.
Block is completed to W with a quick stance movement into HS as above.
Shift yari blade to right side (W) and execute a HS horizontal stab, mid-section high.
Kihap!

14. Low / high horizontal blocks, bo strike, upper stabbing technique
(14-15 to N)
Pivot cw back to N into a HS.
Yari blade is to left side, bo end is right. (Shift hand positions while pivoting.)
Weapon is snapped downward in a low horizontal block, then follow immediately with a horizontal upward block. (Both hands are in the overhand position on the weapon.)

15. Overhead bo strike, upward yari stabbing technique
Move into a right forward stance and execute an overhead bo strike.
(Adjust hands as strike is initiated)
Move quickly into a left forward stance and execute an upward yari stab to the opponent's mid-section.

16. Downward slash, stabbing technique
(16 to E)
Move right foot cw to W (pivoting backwards 90 degrees) and form a LBS facing E.
Execute a downward slashing technique (left hand forward, right hand back at hip area).
Follow immediately with a long stabbing technique to opponent's mid-section.
(A weight shift may occur during the stabbing technique but no foot movement.)

17. Downward slash, stabbing technique
(17 to W)
Move right foot cw to E (pivoting backwards 180 degrees) and form a LBS facing W.
Execute a downward slashing technique (left hand forward, right hand back at hip area).
Follow immediately with a long stabbing technique to opponent's mid-section.
(A weight shift may occur during the stabbing technique but no foot movement.)

18. High guarding technique
(18 to S)
Move right foot back to N ccw 90 degrees.
Form a LBS facing to S.
Raise weapon overhead, yari downward in left hand, bo end high in right hand.
(Hand position shifts during foot movement.)
(Pause briefly in high guard for following strikes.)

19. Triple cross-step stabbing technique
(19-22 to S)
Move to S, right foot moves to left foot, then quickly move to LBS and execute a long sliding stab to opponent's mid-section. Left hand is forward at yari end and right hand back at bo end.
Repeat the above technique.
Repeat the above technique.
(Same footwork is applied in each sequence.)

20. High standing preparation
Move right foot to left foot, forming a standing closed stance.
(Feet will be slightly turned to the right, SW)
Raise weapon overhead, yari blade downward on left side, bo end high in right hand.
(Pause briefly in high preparation for following strike.)

21. Long sliding strike
Move to S in LBS and execute a long sliding strike to opponent's mid-section.

22. Yari extended, breathing technique
(22-24 to N)
Draw left foot back to right, forming an open standing stance.
Fully extend the yari to S at mid-section level.
(Pause with a breathing technique.)
(Shift hand position, as open stance is formed. Right hand is high and left hand is low in preparation for next technique.)

23. Overhead swinging strike
Move left foot; turn ccw 180 degrees to N executing an overhead swinging strike.
(Right hand remains forward while left hand will be close to the body at mid-section.)
Draw left foot to right forming a closed stance at conclusion of the strike.

24. High preparation (transition), long stab, stab to fallen opponent
(Position yari as in high guard preparation. Left hand is low and right hand is high. Do not pause - quickly move to LBS and execute a mid-section stab to N. Feet slightly NE)
Immediately draw left foot back to right foot forming a standing closed stance.
Stab downward with a short sliding strike to the position of a fallen opponent.

25. Over head bo strike, upward yari thrust
(25 to NE)
Move right foot 45 degrees (NE) in a RFS; execute an overhead bo strike.
(Right hand is forward, and left hand back; grip changes as moving to NE)
Immediately move forward and execute an upward yari blade thrust in a LFS.
(Drive left hand forward and upward while moving to NE, right hand is back.)
Kihap!


26. Return to N, dynamic breathing, standing stance
(26-29 to N)
Move left foot and then right foot to form an open standing stance.
Yari is extended outward to N. (Right hand is high, left hand is at mid-section with.)
Breathe. (Dynamic tension in the handgrip is maintained.)
Look right, forward, and left with peripheral vision. (No head or foot movement.)

27. Rotate yari, right double slash downward
Pivot the yari blade cw to right. When the blade returns to the right side and upward,
Move the right foot to N to form a RFS.
Execute a double slashing technique downward to side of an opponent's neck.
(Motion should be diagonal with right hand forward, left hand back.)
Return to a standing stance upon completion of the strikes.

28. Rotate yari, left double slash downward
Change handgrip so that the left hand is high, right hand is at mid-section.)
Pivot the yari blade ccw to left. When the blade returns to the left side and upward,
Move the left foot to N to form a LFS.
Execute a double slashing technique downward to side of an opponent's neck.
(Motion should be diagonal with left hand forward, right hand back.)
Return to a standing stance upon completion of the strikes.

29. Return to N, breathing technique, standing stance
Move left foot to right foot to form an open standing stance.
Change the handgrip so the right hand is high and the left hand is at mid-section.
Look right, forward, and left with peripheral vision. (No head or foot movement)

30. High guarding technique
(30-32 to W)
Move right foot to E forming a LBS, facing W.
Execute high guarding technique; left hand is low and forward, right hand is high at bo end.

31. Long upward strike
Move right foot to left forming a closed stance facing W then quickly move left foot to W in LBS.
Execute a long upward strike. (Technique should be initiated low and directed upward to opponent's mid-section.)

32. Standing stance, mid-section guard
Pull back from previous technique, forming a closed standing stance (feet together towards N).
Yari remains to left side, bo end is high right side protecting diagonally across body.
(Remain facing W during this transition.)

33. Crane stance guard, stomping technique, bo strike, yari slash
(33 to NE)
Look and move E. Draw yari upward with left hand.
Form a left crane stance (lift right leg). Hold stance.
Stomp down with right foot to NE and form a RFS.
Strike with a bo end overhead technique; right hand forward, left hand at back hip.
(This technique initiated during the move to NE.)
Immediately move left foot into a LFS to NE: execute a horizontal yari blade slash. (Hands shift left to front, right to right hip during the previous move.)

34. Open stance, breathing technique
(34-35 to N)
Move left foot back to N, forming an open stance.
(Left foot moves to N and right foot follows to form open standing stance.)
Yari is extended in front of body to N. Right hand is high and left hand is a mid-section.
Execute breathing technique.

35. Horizontal guard, preparation technique
Move left foot to W forming a HS, positioning the yari blade to left and bo end to right. (Remain facing N.)
Hands are at mid-section level, extending yari horizontally to N.
Both hands are positioned in an overhand grip.
(Prepare for the following swinging technique.)

36. Swinging overhead strikes, extended yari, breathing technique
(36 to N-W-S-E-N, 360 degrees)
Move left foot ccw while swinging yari blade overhead in a slashing strike to all directions. (Switch hands prior to swing; left hand is low, slightly up from bo end. Right hand is high, approximately mid-section level)
Complete five swinging techniques in this 360-degree sequence.
(Swinging technique is done with dynamic extension of ki.)
Kihap!


Yari blade is positioned high; bo end is low at abdomen level at completion of the technique.
Remain in HS to N, with yari extended. Breath.

37. Conclusion of Form. Chunbi. Bow.
